Boxing clever....
I went to the Combat Finals at the Echo Arena last night and what a fantastic night it was.
It showcased the martial arts including judo and karate as well as boxing and wrestling.
The highlight for me was the arm wrestling title bout between Monster Mike Todd and The Swedish Scorpion Johan Lindholm - who knew that arm wrestling could be so exciting?
I was literally on the edge of my seat and nearly hoarse shouting for the 'Scorpion' who threatened to shockingly overturn the current world champ.
The finish was nailbiting as Todd just managed to hold on and retain the title. It was also nice to see two ladies taking part in the event - both accomplished and title-holders - but I suspect female arm wrestling isn't something that has ever seen the light of day on regular TV channels.
The event also produced some real winners.
Earlier on in the day Lauren McCormack, a firefighter from Allerton, beat off her competitor from Tyne and Wear to take gold in the 60kg women's boxing - a great achievement for Lauren who has been training for months.

There was no female boxing? All three girls who entered in different classes got straight golds as had no opponents, nice story though!!
I think Michelle is getting confused with the Karate because the fighters used gloves as well as padded shoes.
I thought the arm wrestling was boring, not nearly as exciting as the combat bouts, and I have to commend all firefighters for their good sportsmanship.
We where sat amongst the Venezualans and they were brilliant. They where great fun, and made the evening when they gave my children some hats etc.
I for one will be sad to see the end of the fire fighter games
Lauren was given the gold medal, there were no other competitors!!! She couldnt knockthe skin off a rice pudding
Had my team uk tracksuit top stolen on the combat night finals whilst receiving the GOLD MEDAL for Karate Kumite.
It was a large, if anyone can help as i am now world FF champion it means a lot to me, please email me davidcburnham@btinternat.com.
Thanks
thanks for all the support during the games, just to clarify for you guys who seam to be a little confussed, there were 3 females who entered the boxing, i weighed in to fight last monday but was not allowed to fight as the girl from preston had already had 11 fights. on monday i weighted in at the 63.5kg weight and fought Natile Dodd from Tyne and Wear, the fight went three 2 minute round and the end of a close fought fight i was announced as the winner. hope that clears it up and if any of you want to challenge me im sure a local charity could benifit!!!!!
